8 Common Pest Control Terms

Consider the following 8 most common pest control terms as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which regulates the use of pesticides in the U.S.

1. General Use Pesticide: May be legally purchased and used by the general public when used in a manner specified on the label.

2. Herbicide: Intended for the control or kill of plants.

3. Fungicide: Designed to kill mold, mildew, rust and other fungi.

4. Fumigant: Pesticides in a vapor or gas presentation used to completely fill an area with pesticide to suffocate and kill pests.

5. Registered Pesticide: Meets the federal safety standards and are approved by the EPA to receive a license and registration number. All pesticides sold in the U.S. are required to include their registration number on the label.

6. Pheromone: Use of the natural secretions of a pest to evoke a desired response in that species and attract it to or repel it from an area.

7. Attractant: Use of an inactive ingredient in a pesticide or a lure placed in a trap that is used to entice a pest in an effort to trap or kill.

8. Repellent: Used to dissuade a pest from any area which it is not wanted when given a choice.
